The next day, September 23, the weather was better, although, as at Son, this gave the Germans little to be happy about. It meant that the Allied divebombers, Jabos, would be active again, but because of the effective anti-aircraft defense of the brigade — in particular the "triplet" machine guns taken over f r o m the Luftwaffe — the damage remained limited. N o t so in the ensuing ground battle. Attacks and counterattacks followed each other in wave after wave causing heavy losses to b o t h sides.
On the right flank of the battle group was an army division and on the left flank, hastily raised f r o m depot troops, was Fallschirmjäger Division Erdmann, which was fated to play a central role in the near future in the Peel area. On September 15, Colonel Walther issued the order to counterattack. It failed, and so did another attempt on the following day. Walther therefore decided to resort to defensive measures, the most important task again being assigned to Major Kerutt, w h o during all this time had been the "soul" of the fighting on the German side, defending the road to Valkenswaard.
He ordered his tank to fire. O n e by one the riders tumbled out of their saddles, none of them surviving the charge. "A useless and rather sad gesture on their part," wrote the artillery historian. This was one of the most remarkable incidents encountered during those days by the British 11th Armoured Division; on the whole, the British had engaged German infantry only —Fallschirmjäger were largely used as such —who had only delayed the advance. The British were in high spirits. It looked as if the advance to the northeast was ready to resume.
