This booklet examines the perception of the individual at paintings in John Rawls’s writings from Theory of Justice to Justice as equity: A Restatement. The e-book goals to teach that objections to Rawls’s political perception of the individual fail and Rawlsian perception of political id is defensible. The ebook indicates that the controversy among liberals and communitarians is proper to the present debate relating to perfectionism and neutrality in politics, and clarifies the controversy among Rawls and communitarians in a fashion that might advertise fruitful dialogue at the factor of political identification. It does this via supplying a clearer account of a perception of private id in line with which people are socially constituted, together with the intuitions and assumptions underlying the communitarians’ belief of folks as “socially constituted.” It examines the communitarian objections to liberal political thought and to the liberal notion of individuals, the “unencumbered self.” The e-book differentiates among different types of objection to the liberal notion of people: the metaphysical and normative. As I hope this chapter has shown, the charge that Rawls’s original position or the political conception of the person relies on personhood individualism and identity individualism is common. Interestingly, arguments supporting these charges are rare. Indeed, the only philosopher I know of who has actually argued for these claims is Sandel. Sadly, though, as will become clear in the next chapter, his arguments fail to provide a clear account of the metaphysical view to which Rawls is supposed to be committed or what the alternative, more plausible view, is supposed to be.

Much of Taylor’s account of the liberal/communitarian debate(s) seems accurate. Liberals do seem to think that their position is one of advocacy—they aim to support the normative claim that the right, or justice, is normatively prior to the collective good. Liberals also seem to be united in support of the claim that their normative stance does not commit them to any metaphysical view. In addition, liberals have taken communitarians, such as Sandel, to be addressing normative issues. Taylor seems to be right that communitarians are concerned with metaphysical issues.
