She did not immediately realize what the doctor meant when he said that her son should have been a fair baby. He had come into this world at the same time as the St Giles’s Fair had come to Oxford. Two months later, No. 35 Squadron made an extensive tour of the United States – displaying some of their old Path Finder Force efficiency by never being more than fifteen seconds late on a tight cross-continent flying schedule. Pathinder Cranswick, DSO, DFC, was one of the war’s unknown heroes. To the people of Britain in the Second World War, Alec Cranswick was just one of the nameless ones tensed at the controls of a huge bomber droning nightly towards a waiting enemy target.
