WARNING AND ESCAPE Satisfying the requirement to provide appropriate means of escape from a loft conversion is sometimes a complex task.

Other cladding and roofing materials that may be considered include lead, zinc, copper, timber and GRP. Equally, expanded metal lathing may be fixed to the vertical studwork, and render applied. Dormer cheeks may be glazed, rather than clad, in order to improve daylighting. Where this is proposed, the questions of overlooking and the practical difficulties of cleaning the external face of the glazing panels, which are generally fixed, must be addressed. Traditional dormer forms are generally described by roof rather than window shape.

Daylighting within the conversion is provided either by vertical windows (which by virtue of the sloping mansard face will be dormers in their own right), by roof windows set in the same plane as the mansard slope, or by recessed windows. In contemporary practice, the upper roof slope is generally configured External forms 35 as a conventional flat roof laid to fall towards the face; guttering and fascia are, of course, not provided at the junction between the slopes. Care should be taken in detailing the junction.
