There is one kind of story you have to memorize: the literary tale. Literary stories have an original, known author, not a reteller or an adaptor. The stories are housed under fiction, not folklore. It can be confusing, since authors sometimes re-create folktales, making a new story. Sometimes the same author may simply retell the story, making him or her not author, but adaptor.
