It is indeed true that a student is not an aesthetic tabula rasa. Psychology filters and transforms these data in a period when information has never been more cheap, dense, or hierarchically neutral. The problems have plagued the institution at least since the inception of modernism and its paradoxical design formats. As already stated, the current uneasy truce between romantic notions of the artistic and perfunctory homage to professionalism and technology repeat modernist tensions without the passion that enlivened those tensions. When philosophy has finished showing that everything is a social construct, it does not help us decide which social constructs to retain and which to replace. (Rorty 1994, 227) In this chapter, architecture is viewed as necessarily compromised by history and by the physical arena in which it expresses itself and of which it becomes part.
