The division had already fought in North Africa and on Sicily and was one of the few divisions in the UK with any combat experience. In view of its excellent performance in repulsing a German Panzer attack on the Gela beachhead on Sicily a year before, the 16th Infantry was a natural choice for the initial assault wave. The 29th Division was nicknamed the “Blue and Gray” for its shoulder patch, symbolizing an amalgamation of the Union and Confederate traditions. This National Guard division was headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, and as a mid-Atlantic border state between north and south, the division drew its units from Maryland and Virginia.
