To grasp the complexity of the political crisis before us—the new and expanding forms of globalization, the massive presence of Middle Eastern diasporic communities in Western countries, and the new forms of racism directed against Muslims and Arabs—we need a transnational perspective now more than ever. Seeking to help Wll this need, I analyze racial, sexual, and gender formations in the context of Iranian modernity and postmodernity through a transnational framework. I argue that the signiWer of Muslim women, so prevalent in current Western representational practices, cannot be truly examined without stepping outside of the limitations of civilizational thinking; for, to put it bluntly, the borders of barbarism and civilization—and thus the terms of entry into the civilized world—are drawn by women’s bodies, signifying their association with, or possession by, either a civilized or a barbaric community of men.
Throughout this book I am deeply interested in the politics of the image and the ways in which it dominates and seduces by investing power in particular signiWers, tropes, and descriptions.
