I was surprised by tbe facI that not a small number of physicists in Europe were eamestly engaged in such a very fundamenlai or ratber philosphical problem. Most Japanese physicisls are much mOre pragmatic. In facI, only a few persons in Japan are working in this area. Furthennore. ] am very mueh impressed by tbe fael tbat some European physieists persisl in rooling their physieal tbeories in their own philosophieal positions, as was seen in the preceding section. and that they also want 10 base tbeir philosophieal principles or spirilual lives based upon Iheir own tbeories of physies.

Nevertheless, each particle retains the wave nature, because the original interference pattern can be reproduced again by accumulating many independent spots. This is the experimental behavior of the wave-partic/e duality. In the above ideal experiment, we cannol find the particle at any other place than Q immediately after the detection, so that the experiment causes the following change of the wave function: Eq. (2) where 'I'Q distributes only around Q. The change is called "wave packet reduction" or "wave function collapse" by measurement (by the position measurement in this case), which is a logical consequence of the probability interpretation.
