Research conducted by the faculty and graduate students of the Department is as wide-ranging (both topically and geographically) as the field itself. The religious dimension has received relatively little attention. Equally central to this view was a recognition of the historicity of human culture and a rejection of any conception of a fixed, determined human nature on which a science of man parallel in structure to the natural sciences (i.e., a science with laws, whether empirical or rational, that determine the actions and the historical development of mankind) could be based.
