Accordingly, the following uniforms were identifiable: This was a formal uniform, consisting of an Attila (Hussar-style tunic) of dark blue cloth, with a Prussian collar and a square-shaped front of six braided cords and three rows of six brass buttons across the chest, worn with riding breeches, boots and spurs. S. issues a six-color, desert-shaded uniform (dubbed "chocolate chip"), which is later associated with Norma Schwarzkopf during the Gulf War.

While most soldiers in Vietnam wore the standard olive drab uniform, some specialized units — like long range reconnaissance patrol members — were given the Army's Engineer Research and Development Lab-made camouflage pattern, also called the ERDL pattern, although some used a tiger stripe pattern that local south Vietnamese forces had been wearing.

However, the NWU is made in three variants: Type I, predominantly blue with some gray for the majority of sailors, originally developed for shipboard use; Type II, a desert digital pattern currently restricted to SEALs and other Sailors assigned to Naval Special Warfare Units when in desert environments; and Type III, a woodland digital pattern for sailors in expeditionary units (not shipboard) such as Seabees and Riverine units. During the winter of 1904-05 the heavier blue uniforms were again worn but often under the loose fitting summer khaki drill for camouflage.
